On March 9th, 2025, I was baptized, and my life began to change. At that time, I was 15, and now I'm 16. Over the past nine months, I have observed many things on my journey as a teenager. I've experienced numerous failures. During the summer of 2025, I was incredibly passionate about seeking the truth. I even started a group chat called "Growth." I would highlight any verse that resonated with me and share it on my Instagram and Snapchat stories, something I continue to do. My baptism marked a new beginning, as I embraced my identity in Christ. When I received the gift of the Holy Spirit, I felt a powerful fire and an unquenchable thirst. It's truly one of the top five gifts given to humanity. I want to share some advice with teens who want to renew their relationship with Christ this coming year, to help them succeed in their spiritual journey. Before I dive into that, I want to discuss something that isn't often explained in this walk.
Be aware of this
What many teen Christians aren't often told is that following the path of righteousness is challenging. In my experience, striving to be virtuous in a world where peers might label you as "lame" or "boring" is one of the toughest obstacles, especially when these peers are close friends. Losing friends or drifting apart is always difficult. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 mentions that there are seasons for everything. These are the realities that many don't warn you about when you decide to truly follow Christ. While some might initially find your commitment interesting or commendable, they may start distancing themselves because your energy has changed. Another piece of advice is to be prepared for fatigue. You will encounter spiritual battles and mentally taxing situations, sometimes testing your faith. I want you to be aware of these upcoming challenges because it's not easy. The Bible reminds us in Ephesians 6:12 that as followers of Christ, we face many trials. Now, let's discuss a new year's resolution.
I don't know what to read?
Many teen Christians or those curious about the faith often ask me what they should read or where to begin. When I started reading the Bible, I began with parts I was already familiar with, like Proverbs, known as the "book of wisdom." I wanted to gain wisdom and understanding, so that's where I started. I suggest you read about topics you're curious about or areas where you want to learn more. For example, if you're interested in learning more about Jesus and his teachings, read the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). If you're curious about creation or the beginning of the world, start with Genesis. I know the Bible can be challenging to understand, but fortunately, there are many versions available. The Bible app offers all these resources. Begin by reading five scriptures a day, studying, and reflecting on them. Always remember the importance of context; I can't emphasize this enough. Studying these scriptures will benefit you more than you might expect. The Bible advises us to study to show ourselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15).
How can I start praying?
Prayer is a concept I've personally struggled with, either by not fully understanding it or simply not engaging in it. As teen Christians, or even as adults, we might not pray because we believe we can handle situations on our own. However, the Bible advises us not to rely solely on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). What does this mean? It emphasizes trusting in God's wisdom rather than our own. The verse also assures us of guidance on a secure path if we acknowledge Him. This is the first thing we need to grasp about prayer. A respected author and leader, Dr. Myles Munroe, once said, "Prayer is man giving God the legal right and permission to interfere in earth's affairs." May he rest in peace. He implies that since God granted us authority over the earth and relinquished His own, we must grant Him permission to act here. For some, the act of kneeling and bowing their head may be challenging, and I understand that. We can address this simply by expressing gratitude to God and acknowledging Him. The Bible instructs us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This helps us maintain a continuous awareness of God throughout the day.
I can't go to church
I understand that some individuals are unable to attend church for various reasons, and church is a place where you can connect with others who share your beliefs. If attending church isn't possible or you don't have a church community, watching sermons online is a good alternative to ensure you're still hearing the message. If you desire to be in the church environment but can't, create a similar atmosphere at home. Before starting your sermon, listen to worship or praise music. Many churches do this to exalt God and uplift Him. Creating this atmosphere allows God to move freely and enhances your experience of His presence. Don't be misled by those who claim that attending church isn't necessary for a relationship with Christ. While a physical building isn't required for the relationship, the church offers consistent teaching and opportunities for spiritual growth. Remember, the church is composed of people who have gifts to build up the community. Thus, the church is important, but if you can't attend, there are always alternatives.
What music should I listen to?
Music plays a significant role in the daily lives of teenagers. It can provide comfort when no one else is around, making them feel understood and offering a sense of security. There is ongoing debate about whether Christians should listen to secular music, which is defined as music without a religious purpose. While some secular music may be acceptable, not all of it is suitable. Music has a profound ability to connect with the soul, entering through the ears. It's important to be mindful of what you listen to. Gospel music is one way I seek to experience His presence daily. When I'm happy, I listen to praise music to express my joy (James 5:13). When I'm thankful, I turn to worship music. Praise and worship provide another way to connect with God, offering an intimate feeling when the beat and lyrics resonate within you.
My reputation
Reputation is a significant concern for many teenagers. Social media, school, and friends all significantly influence one's reputation. When you follow Christ, your reputation is bound to change among your peers, which is not necessarily negative, as indicated in Luke 6:22-23. From my experience, this transformation is usually gradual. Initially, people may not notice the change, assuming it's just a phase. Because of this assumption, they might test your commitment to see if you are truly dedicated. They may try to provoke you or even ridicule you for your beliefs. Eventually, they will accept that you have changed, but this acceptance is not immediate. Even after acceptance, don't expect them to become your friends again, as it's uncommon for them to do so. These aren't situations people typically warn you about or prepare you for, but it's important to remember that we are not seeking approval from the world.
Prayer
Dear heavenly father I thank you. I thank you for allowing us to wake up to another day to be able to worship you. I thank you for keeping us safe throughout 2025. You have been better than good to us. Lord we ask that you let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Lord you told us that when we draw nigh to you, you will draw nigh to us. We are asking that you continue to bless us and continue to just keep us. We know that you love us and we just wanna tell you that whatever we have done to dishonor you or disobey that we repent of that. Lord you are our Shepard. Guide us and lead us in the path of righteousness and let your spirit overtake us. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray amen.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I hope you found this helpful and gained some insights. I wish I had known these things when I began this journey, and in just nine months, I've learned a great deal. I see 2026 as a year full of lessons and growth. Whatever weighed you down in 2025, 2026 will be the year to release it. This marks a new beginning for you to flourish in grace. I hope that whoever reads this remains aligned with God and enjoys a wonderful new year.
